Residential architecture & design for existing structures or new ground up homes, tailored down to every last detail for you and your family. We have experience designing for various types of projects, ranging from single family homes to townhouses, condos, and multi-family buildings.
Architecture and design for retail, restaurant, hotel, office, and civic projects. We work with retail brands, developers, restauranteurs, wine enthusiasts, and more to bring their brick and mortar dreams to life. We design for all aspects of the products & brands that are being showcased, focusing on the experience of the end user.
We specialize in transforming interior spaces into beautiful environments for lounging, entertaining, cooking, working, and welcoming.
Conceptualizing and designing for custom millwork and cabinetry. Kitchens, banquettes, libraries, closets, moldings, etc. We visualize and detail for function, character, timelessness, and beauty.
We use 3D as a design tool to develop the design for our projects. This allows us to be confident in what we present to the client, but also allows the client to understand the design before it’s built.
We are often tasked with designing furniture & decorative lighting that is specific to a projects aesthetic. We have craftspeople and fabricators around the world that help us achieve this, while (typically) working within a budget.
Everything matters. We design and specify the lighting, finishes, doors, windows, hardware… you name it.
We work closely with clients, general contractors, millworkers, cities, engineers, design consultants, and product suppliers to realize projects until completion. We coordinate the implementation of the design with budgets and trades people to ensure the highest quality of construction is achieved.
Varlands has worked all over the globe. We are based in the Northeast United States and licensed in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, however we’ve worked on a variety of projects in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. When working outside of our licensed areas we typically team up with a local architect, engineer, expeditor, and/or general contractor to obtain necessary permits. Michael is a Registered Architect in the State of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. He holds Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees of Architecture from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, MA. He spent a number of years working for Russell Riccardi Architects, Rockwell Group, and Champalimaud Design in New York City before starting Varlands. Michael is always trying to come up with creative ways to solve problems, using this creativity all the way through to the fine details. His knack for how things are built has been a fascinating tool for the never ending architectural and design world he surrounds himself with.
Jaclyn is a Registered Architect in the State of New York and Rhode Island. She holds Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees of Architecture from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, MA. After leaving Boston she spent time working for Maya Lin Studio and Curtis + Ginsberg Architects in New York City and Sionas Architecture in Montclair, NJ. Jaclyn has a passion for visualizing and questioning our experiences within both the natural world and our man-made environments. This ongoing analysis, paired with her dedication to simplicity and luxury, has shaped her into a perpetual student of the interaction between humans, architecture, and the natural world.
